Footy is finally back!

First up a big congratulations to our team leaders, who were each nominated by their peers :

  • Tommy Povey (Captain)
  • Tommo Glide and Ben Nash (Vice Captains)

Well done boys, it is a fine effort to be recognised by your fellow teammates as leaders.

Secondly, a warm welcome to BORIS, JAMES and OLLIE!! Great to have you all on board boys – here’s to a fun year of footy ahead.

And finally, a quick note of thanks to our tireless team manager Tammie who has done a power of work to get us all organised in the off season and get us in the right place ready and raring to tackle the year ahead – Thanks Tammie from all of us!!

Now, on to our first hitout against the Waverley Blues away at their home ground.

The Blues are always a competitive outfit at all age groups and this first game was to be no different. It was also the first competitive game of footy for a majority of the team.

From the first bounce the boys showed great endeavour and a real appetite for the contest. The Blues were matching our efforts and the game was a bit of an arm wrestle with no easy kicks. Benny Spieth was proving a real livewire winning some hot contests and swinging on to his left boot to give Tyler, Josh, Brennan, James and Benny B a chance to kick a score. Despite the ball spending a decent amount of time in our forward half it was Waverley who managed to carry the ball forward and kick the first goal of the game.

Back into the middle and we seemed to go up a cog working the ball forward for a couple of handy goals. Importantly we were starting to settle in to the game and started doing the team things: manning up, running hard and running in numbers. At the end of the first quarter we were a kick in front 2-1-13 to 1-0-6.

The second quarter started and we had some momentum. Nashy was getting first hands on the ball down to Tully, Tommy and Ben who were all hard at the contest in the middle and driving the ball forward. Our backline, Arch, Sammy, Zac and Brodie were equally impressive playing good disciplined footy in front of their opponents with big Boris reading the ball brilliantly taking some solid defensive marks and getting the ball out of our backline quickly. Tommo and Bradshaw were also having an impact ensuring that we were organised and in the right position. Josh was getting plenty of it as was Noah who was showing great leadership setting up ‘the wall’ to keep the ball in our forward line.

Halftime and we maintained a slight lead.

After half time we were kicking with a bit of a breeze and took advantage of it. It was particularly pleasing to see the boys looking to play on when we had possession of the ball and running in numbers with link handball and ending with a good kick to a team mate in space. Some notable individual performances included Nashy taking strong marks up forward and kicking a nice goal; Tommy’s big pack mark; Sammy’s relentless attack on the ball ending with a nice goal.

At three quarter time the boys were a couple of goals ahead.

Into the last quarter and the Blues won the first clearance and took it forward for a nice goal. This set a bit of a trend. The Blues were getting in first for the ball and winning the contests that we had been winning for most of the game. We were under some real pressure and the boys responded. Across the ground we lifted our pressure on the opposition when they had the ball. The play of the day involved Nashy contesting the ruck after a Blues goal, winning the tap, charging forward and getting on the end of another big mark deep in our forward line and kicking a goal.

When the final siren sounded we were 15pt winners. It was a real team effort with all boys having an impact. Better players on the day included Tully who ran hard all day and kicked an important goal in the last; Nashy who played a blinder, strong in the middle and around the ground taking strong marks and kicking a couple of good goals; Sammy who hunted the ball all day; Ben Spieth who got plenty early; Noah who also got plenty of it and showed good on field leadership with his positioning and defensive mindset.

All in all it was a great first up hit out boys. You should all be proud of your efforts. It was a good win against good opposition played in the right spirit.

We want to be known as a hard but fair team and today was certainly a good start.

See you on the track.
